  • ANALYSIS OF INNOVATION AND COMPETITION PROCESSES
28/09/2011 - 30/09/2011 Dipartimento di Elettronica e Informazione, Politecnico di Milano, Milano (ITALY)
In quite diversified fields of science such as information technology, economics, business and organization, sociology, and biology, mechanisms of innovation and competition can be clearly identified. The interaction among innovation and competition results in the slow evolution of the characteristic traits of the entire process. The formal models which allow to describe these evolutionary scenarios are in general dynamic and nonlinear. The aim of the course is to present the modelling approaches proposed in the literature to describe innovation and competition processes, with particular emphasis on the so-called replicator and adaptive dinamics.

  • IEEE International Meeting on Analysis and Applications of Nonsmooth Systems
10/09/2014 - // Como (ITALY)AANS2014 focuses on theoretical and applied research that involves discontinuous and nonsmooth systems. The domain of application of nonsmooth models is growing to encompass a broad and challenging set of applications, including smart grids, large integrated circuits, complex mechanical and cyberphysical systems, and genetic circuits, which require the study of systems that are a lot larger and include many more uncertainties than those for which nonsmooth systems theory was initially developed. The main objective of this conference is to bring together researchers in applied and theoretical nonsmooth systems to share the latest theoretical results, to discuss novel and promising applications, to identify the challenges that lie at the frontier of mathematics and engineering and plan the most promising routes to a solution. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: local and global results on nonsmooth dynamics; strategies for the analysis and control of hybrid systems; dynamics of large or networked nonsmooth systems, reduction techniques; numerical tools for the analysis and simulation of nonsmooth systems; applications of nonsmooth models in physics and engineering; deterministic and stochastic modelling frameworks.

  • Mediterranean School of Complex Networks
09/06/2014 - 13/06/2014 Salina (ITALY)In the last decade, network theory has been revealed to be a perfect instrument to model the structure of complex systems and the dynamical process they are involved into. The wide variety of applications to social sciences, technological networks, biology, transportation and economic, to cite just only some of them, showed that network theory is suitable to provide new insights into many problems. The goal of the 1st Mediterranean School of Complex Networks will be twofold: Provide a theoretical background to PhD students and young researchers in the field, with particular attention to current trends in Network Science. Promote philosophical and scientific exchange between all participants, i.e., lecturers and attendants. For this reason, the program will involve lectures from experts in different fields (social science, game theory, biology, neuroscience, etc) for 50% of the duration of the school. The remaining time will be dedicated to: Flash talks given by attendants, followed by debates; Thematic round tables involving lecturers and attendants. • Living systems, from interaction patterns to critical behavior
16/09/2015 - 19/09/2015 San Servolo Island Venice (ITALY)Recent availability of large volumes of ecological and biological data spanning a wide range of scales, made it evident that, despite their diversity, living systems are characterized by patterns/regularities repeated from microscopic to global scales. This workshop aims to explore how these recurrent phenomena emerge as the result of concerted interactions among their constituent elements (e.g. species, or genes), using a combination of approaches inspired by statistical mechanics, network analysis and the theory of complex systems. The aim of the workshop is to introduce students and young researchers with strong background in quantitative sciences to methods and ideas used to describe such complex systems. The range of topics covered at the workshop is very broad, ranging from genomics to ecology, with the ultimate goal of identifying similarities and differences of complex biological systems operating at different scales.
